Here we’ve outlined which style choices are not only going to be the hot tickets for eateries in the coming 12 months, but beyond too.
Bringing diners closer to the natural world is becoming increasingly popular. Whilst our cousins on the continent and in America have long appreciated the benefits of ‘al fresco’ dining, due to our more ‘inclement climate’, the trend here in the UK has been restricted to the summer months. However, smart restaurant owners are now capitalising on the outside experience with tables and chairs which can withstand the very worst that the British weather can throw at them. Larger windows and expanses of glass are a clever psychological trick to enhance the feeling that diners are eating in a place that truly brings the outside inside.
Retro & Vintage Themes
Despite the fact that it fell out of favour for a while (blame Tom Cruise in the movie ‘Cocktail’) neon is enjoying a resurgence in many restaurants and eateries. Unlike the lurid, head-ache inducing tones from the 1980’s the current trend is toward much more muted colours. With its distinctly retro feel neon is very much on trend for popular restaurant interior design themes this year. Chairs and tables in the style of the 1960’s and 70’s are also tipped to be strongly favoured in 2017, with more vintage fabrics such as velvet proving popular for eateries looking for a twist on the contemporary dining experience.
The environment and sustainability are two phrases which have firmly embedded themselves into the culture of the 21st century – Therefore, it’s only natural that their influence should extend beyond recycling and into the interior design of restaurants. The use of raw materials such as untreated wood, simple brickwork – even unadorned concrete – is being seen as a positive design decision for eateries. Architects and interior design experts have cleverly blended the two – sometimes opposing – elements of the modern world, the environment and the urban, to create a warm, modern dining ambience.
Stone Cold Luxury
Refined and redolent of classical architecture marble is becoming a popular interior design choice for restaurants. Previously limited to only the most opulent of dining experiences the increasing availability of hyper-realistic marble-effect stone tiles is making this a much more affordable choice for a range of restaurants and dining areas. Whilst some might consider marble a cold, maybe even clinical, interior design choice it also has a powerful association with indulgence. Given the right choice of colour and placement this is a material which can lend a feeling of true classical elegance to any restaurant.
Continuing 2017’s overall restaurant interior design slant toward all things nature-related, the rustic look is set to remain a firm favourite. The traditional charm of a country inn with its mixture of earthy tones and natural materials, such as wood and leather, ties in nicely with the retro trend highlighted above. However, a slight deviation worth noting is the movement away from dark, brooding interiors toward lighter, more welcoming dining areas. Heavier chairs, tables and interior restaurant furniture are likely to be overtaken by slimmer, more elegant designs. Let’s hope they don’t bring back the fizzy bitter too…
Lighting the way
Light is a critical factor in any restaurant interior design – and the forthcoming trends for 2017 seem to be reflecting customer’s general move toward a more casual, but still intimate dining experience. Edison light bulbs have fallen distinctly out of favour with discreet, recessed mood lighting and understated lamps rapidly overtaking the popularity of chandeliers. An abundance of natural light (or at least making the best of what light you have) is becoming more and more popular with diners – reinforcing 2017’s trend toward large, picture windows and the concept of “bringing the outside in”.
Colour it neutral
If you hadn’t already guessed it by now, the term ‘natural’ is very much in vogue when it comes to interior restaurant design for 2017. Following on from the current trend in the fashion industry for a bias toward muted, pastel shades, delicacy and understatement are the hot tones being applied to the walls in many a new dining area. Stronger effects are being championed by monochrome designs – with the classic, chess board flooring tying in nicely with the surge in ‘retro’ or vintage styles.
Move away from heavy metal
Evocative of the Victorian and Edwardian periods brass is, once more, a fine reflection of the vintage restaurant interior design trend which has been gathering pace since the start of the year. However, don’t go splashing out on that huge old brass ship’s bell for the bar area just yet – the obvious use of brass (and other metals) for interiors is declining, with more subtle uses restricted to modest accessories, lighting and furniture detailing being favoured. ‘Industrial’ level uses of excessive metal across the restaurant are now being seen as undesirable.
Subtle and timeless
For those looking for an interior design choice that will stand the test of time, you might be wise to heed the words “Less is more”. Simple, elegant designs – often focused on a minimalist approach to both decoration and furniture – is often the least likely to succumb to looking dated quickly. The classic white tablecloth is still the best backdrop for a fine dining experience. The same can be said of restaurant interior design. Just like Coco Chanel’s iconic ‘little black dress’, simplicity and subtlety never go out of fashion.
